In this article, I’m going to teach you everything you need to know about tocotrienol supplements.
Numerous studies over the past two decades have clearly proven that the tocotrienol form of vitamin E is a top choice for:
- Skin Rejuvenation
- Cardiovascular Protection
- Heart Health
- Bone Health
- Blood Sugar Metabolism
- Brain Health
- Healthy Hair
- Supports Inflammatory Response
- Promotes Healthy Immune Response
It is worthwhile understanding more about them and how they can improve your health and your skin.
Tocotrienol Supplements – What’s the Difference?
The vitamin E family consists of four tocotrienols and four tocopherols. D alpha tocopherol is the commonly understood form of vitamin E and has been extensively researched and has its own value to human health.
The difference between tocotrienols and tocopherols is the “tail” on the vitamin E molecule.
Tocopherols have a long saturated tail.
Tocotrienols have a short unsaturated tail.
The unique structure of tocotrienols enables them to do many things that tocopherols cannot do.
- Easier access to cells
- Better antioxidant function in cells
- Better ability to move around in cells
- Activation of a wide variety of gene signals
Tocotrienol Supplements – Where Are They Derived From?
Tocotrienols are derived from 3 main sources, palm oil, rice bran oil and Annatto. Annatto is the only source that does not contain tochopherol. While alpha tocopherol is found in most multi-vitamins and supplemented in food research says this popular vitamin E interferes with the uptake and function of Tocotrienols.
While tocotrienols made their claim to fame for cardiovascular and nervous system support, their list of benefits keeps growing.
They now join a number of other nutrients as tools to assist in the healthy function of blood sugar and insulin, while also supporting kidney health.
Tocotrienols have immunostimulatory effects and clinical benefits to enhance immune response.
Tocotrienols are a powerfully versatile nutrient.
Your brain has amazing abilities and can heal itself.
Tocotrienol Supplements – Brain Health
That’s not something you’re likely to hear from mainstream medicine — especially if you or a loved one suffer from the effects of stroke, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or another form of dementia.
Sadly most people with brain damage have been deemed “hopeless” by so-called medical experts.
There is nothing hopeless about dementia — no matter what its cause.
With the right nutrients, there are times when brain damage can be reversed.
Tocotrienols significantly reduce the formation of scar tissue in your brain — called white matter lesions- found in stroke, Alzheimer’s and other dementia patients. This scar tissue is what blocks brain-signal traffic.
Tocotrienol Supplements – Cancer and Anti-aging
Traditional medical establishment was interested only in tocopherols but now they realize that the real anti-aging strength of vitamin E lies in the power of its tocotrienols. They can even cross the protective blood-brain barrier to do their jobs.
These powerful antioxidants also mop up free radicals — biochemical molecules which are linked to cancer and aging.
When “old” cells stop dividing, they stop creating new cells. These obsolete cells also lose the ability to die off, a condition called cellular senescence. Senescent cells then accumulate in the body, emitting pro-inflammatory chemicals – promoting aging and increasing risk of cancer.
By clearing away senile cells and inducing aging in malignant cells, tocotrienols could stop tumors from growing.
Tocotrienols have also been proven to safeguard against eyesight degeneration and even reverse obesity. Studies show that tocotrienols also help prevent weight gain from high insulin levels.
Tocotrienols are an important anti-aging nutrient because they protect and lengthen your telomeres, the caps at the ends of chromosomes that determine each cell’s biological age.
Longer telomeres signify more youthful health.
Shorter ones signal faster aging and mean that you’re the more prone to chronic diseases and reduced life expectancy.
Tocotrienol Supplements – More Benefits
Tocotrienols also preserve telomerase activity in cells, the enzyme that rebuilds the telomere. There is now enough scientific evidence to contend that baldness can be at least partly reversed naturally.
Natural strategies for premature baldness or hair loss are not magic bullets.
Rather, they help the body help itself.
In the case of hair loss, nutrition strategies can assist the health of our hair follicles which can affect hormone and enzyme changes that change the dynamic of the hair follicles.
Diabetics have malfunctioning insulin; the longer their blood sugar remains elevated the more likely they are to experience deteriorating kidneys. Diabetics need kidney support and it appears that tocotrienols can help.
Tocotrienols also improved blood glucose utilization and insulin sensitivity.
These are important aspects of metabolism to support optimal blood sugar metabolism.
Tocotrienols offer a safe and effective way to help achieve or maintain healthy cholesterol, while simultaneously protecting your arteries.
Tocotrienol Supplements – Effects on Cholesterol
As research has progressed, scientists showed that tocotrienols were reducing the same enzyme that statins in high doses take a sledgehammer to, essentially clogging up its receptors so that no communication can get through.
By comparison, tocotrienols work more on a consulting basis, gently down-regulating the enzyme as part of a communication strategy.
Of course, tocotrienols have none of the toxic side effects that statins have.
Scientists from the University of Missouri report that Tocotrienol doses ranging with the optimum dose of 250 mg decreases total cholesterol by 15%, LDL by 18%, and tryglycerides by 14% after only 4 weeks.
While your liver uses this melvalonate pathway to produce LDL cholesterol for your entire body, every cell in your body also uses the same pathway to produce small pieces of cholesterol that are vital for maintaining the health and survival of any cell. In cancer situations, this pathway is hijacked and used by cancer cells to foster their own survival at the expense of your body.
Tocotrienols had a unique ability to differentiate between healthy cells and cancer cells and in the case of cancer they could cripple a primary defense system of the cancer. Statins can also kill cancer in a test tube but the dose required to kill cancer in humans kills the human first.
On the other hand, tocotrienols have demonstrated excellent tumor killing ability, even helping chemo drugs work much better on resistant forms of cancer. Tocotrienols do not injure the human body. In addition to the cholesterol-lowering properties of tocotrienols scientists were becoming interested in the ability of tocotrienols to positively benefit the health of arteries.
In this case the focus turned primarily to alpha tocotrienol, which demonstrated a high level of antioxidant function. It was first recognized that alpha tocotrienol could prevent free radical damage to LDL cholesterol in humans with high cholesterol. Only damaged (oxidized LDL) can form plaque in the arteries.
Scientists then tested tocotrienols in those who were genetically programmed to develop high cholesterol and hardening of the arteries when eating a high fat diet. When given tocotrienols and a high fat diet they did not develop high cholesterol and the hardening of their arteries was almost completely stopped (98 percent reduction).
Free radical damage in the blood was significantly reduced they had much less thickening of their arteries as well as retaining more elastic properties in their arteries. In order for damaged cholesterol to stick to the lining of your arteries it is engulfed by macrophages (immune cells) that then stick to the endothelial cells that line your arteries.
When endothelial cells become inflamed they project a Velcro-like piece of fly paper on the surface of their cells (adhesion molecules) which then enable the cholesterol-laden macrophages to lock on and start the plaque-forming process.
A study with inflamed human endothelial cells shows that alpha tocotrienol powerfully inhibits this sticking process, turning off the sticky adhesion molecules by turning down the inflammatory gene regulator within the endothelial cell (NF-kappaB). The ability of alpha tocotrienol to regulate the core inflammatory gene signal is highly relevant to human health, since it is now recognized that chronic low-grade activation of NF-kappaB is a primary factor in nearly every disease of aging.
Indeed, researchers soon discovered that alpha tocotrienol, but not d alpha tocopherol, could completely inhibit exitotoxic injury to brain cells (a key feature to most aspects of cognitive decline and memory loss). Numerous review articles tout the broad range of benefits, including the prevention of disease.

We have known for years that an adequate intake of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, is important for expectant mothers. Researchers presenting at the 2017 Experimental Biology meeting recently shared data regarding the typical DHA and EPA intake of pregnant women in their diet.
A study of pregnant women revealed that on average they were consuming 30 mg of EPA and 59 mg of DHA naturally in their diet, which falls short of the recommendation listed in the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
Sunset includes 500 mg of total omega-3s per serving.

Tocotrienol Supplements – What is the Best Way to Consume Tocotrienols?
It’s becoming more clear that, at the molecular level, tocotrienols are a much more potent and effective source of Vitamin E. The annatto bush, an oily plant that grows in South America, is the only natural compound in the world that offers pure tocotrienols without the accompanying tocopherols that may limit the benefits.
Furthermore, annatto tocotrienol has the highest tocotrienol concentrations with 150 – 300 times fewer Tocopherols than rice and palm sources.
Only Sunset contains annatto Tocotrienols, offering the most health benefits.
Other Sunset Ingredients for Health and Wellness
Omega-3s are an essential fatty acid required for optimal health. This healthy molecule is found in every cell of the body, particularly in the brain and heart. Because the body doesn’t produce these oils on its own, they must be obtained through dietary consumption.
Delivered from Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon and other wild fish, Sunset contains extremely high levels of both EFA and DHA forms of Omega-3s.
Studies show that Omega-3s strongly support the body’s healthy inflammation response, maintaining proper vascularization throughout the body and supporting artery and heart health.
Vitamin A (Beta-carotene)
Beta-carotene is an organic compound found abundantly in plants and vegetables. A member of the carotenoids, it can be metabolized into Vitamin A, yielding many compelling health benefits. These include heart health, cell protection, and heightened immunity.
This essential nutrient is also beneficial in sustaining optical health and brain function. Beta-carotene is lipid-soluble and acts as an antioxidant, protecting cells from oxidation damage. With the addition of this powerful compound in Sunset, you’ll be giving your body more of what it needs.
Vitamin D is one of several vitamins required for normal growth and development. This essential nutrient contributes to the absorption of calcium, which is an important process for bone development and strength.
Vitamin D promotes cellular growth, boosts the immune system, and helps support proper inflammatory response. Studies have also shown that Vitamin D assists in maintaining healthy blood pressure and sustaining cardiovascular health.
One unique aspect of Vitamin D is that it can be created by our bodies with the aid of sun exposure. However, studies show an alarming rate of Vitamin D deficiency in the USA. Since most Americans are not producing enough on their own, Vitamin D supplementation can provide the support and protection the body needs from this essential nutrient.
