Men and Cosmetic Procedures

While it’s no secret that men seek out cosmetic procedures just like women these days (BROTOX anyone?), we don’t typically consider how different men’s procedures are from women’s. It turns out, anti-aging procedures aren’t a one-size-fits-all approach to a more youthful face.
The American Academy of Dermatology says that the distinct variances between men’s and women’s skin biology, facial anatomy and aging process play a huge role as to why genders have different kinds of rejuvenation needs.
Largely driven by hormonal factors, there are certain aspects that make our skin very different. Men, for instance, have thicker skin with larger pores and less subcutaneous fat than women, making them “sinkers” more than “wrinklers,” according to the AAD. They also “generate more sweat and four times more sebum than women’s skin.” Lucky for them, their facial hair also provides structural support to their face and contributes to fewer wrinkles in the lower half of the face.
This all means that there are treatment options specifically designed to address men’s aging concerns. Since volume loss is one of the most noticeable characteristics of older men, dermal fillers are the most important in creating a youthful appearance. Skin resurfacing with chemical peels, microdermabrasion or laser devices is also the most useful to men as they are typically more exposed to the sun and its damaging effects than women because of short hairstyles, balding scalps, outdoor occupations and outdoor hobbies.
